Your Want, Need & Desire | Spiritual Direction - The Work, J.R. Mahon
What is it that you want, need and desire? Most never consider these words. Most tend to think these words are generally synonymous and have little effect on the day to day, yet these words have a very profound movement for how you live life. We stay away from these words for a few reasons. Some fear they drive a selfish lifestyle, away from faith systems that teach self denial. While some hold the value of safety and security in these words never allowing anyone too close to “wants,” “needs” and “desires” fearing unearthing them could lead to the exposure of who they are, leaving them vulnerable. Now, I’m not the guy that thinks you’re unaware, In fact, I think you have a pretty damn good idea of what's happening inside of you. That's why the questions are a great place to start dealing with your “bizziness.” FTR… I get we can lie to ourselves but that as a principal doesn't take away the fact we know what's going inside.
We need definitions… one my first spiritual mentors taught me early on, “define the words you use.” so… here are a few definitions. There are slight differences among the three words we are exploring today, it's important we understand the differences and finesse their use in our lives
Want - A deep longing to possess something - (can be person, place or thing)
Need - An essential requirement
Desire - A deep longing or hope for something
The challenge? Answer the questions in three areas of your life - personally, professionally and spiritually. The goal? More awareness and consciousness of your “stuff!”
I make very few guarantees but this exercise helps define who you are… the good, the bad and the ugly. Yes! A few of you got ugly!
